Tuesday, September 20, 2011 12:00 PM

Today the Equip 2 Endure Team interview veteran survivalist expert and owner of The Wilderness Learning Center, Marty Simon. Martys’ outdoor career began at age 9 when he was introduced to scouting.  He stayed with the Boy Scout program until he was 21, working my way up to Explorer Advisor, council level.

After that approximately 3 years was spent hiking, camping, fishing, hunting and trapping throughout northern New Jersey and southern New York.

In 1963,  he was inducted into the US Army.  After basic and advanced infantry training he sent to explosive ordinance school, combat demolitions school and jungle survival school in Panama and then off to Vietnam. After returning and being discharged he went back to my love of camping and the outdoors.

In 1970, he reenlisted in the army, eventually serving over 17 years, mostly as an instructor.  During this time he also attended small arms specialist school, arctic and temperate survival school, desert survival school and back to Panama for instructors survival school.

In 1978 I became an advisor for the National Guard.  While in this position I further attended many schools including recruiting, career counseling, army professional education center, land warfare, BTMS and other schools.  In 1984 he left the US Army returning home and establishing The Wilderness Training Center. At this time he ran programs for US Air Force Pilots. In 2000 he changed the name to The Wilderness Learning Center.

Also during 1984 to present he has taught at North Country Community College, Clinton Community College and Mater Dei College and Vermont Outdoor Women, teaching programs on survival, land navigation, herbs, wilderness medicine and health. During his career he has taught US Army and Air force, Italian, German, and Canadian troops.  He also served on the Quebec, Canada council of Boy Scouts as training officer for adults during which time he received my Wood Badge. All together he has over 55 years experience teaching outdoor survival and related subjects.  A former licensed New York State Guide, former Region 5 Director and Director at Large of the NY State Guides Association (NYSOGA), a member of the Vermont Outdoor Guides Association (VOGA) and certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR.

Equip 2 Endure Show #5 - June 07,2011

Tuesday, May 31, 2011 12:00 PM

This week join Adam and Robby with their special guest co-host Staff Sergeant James Stanek (Retired). James (Jim) was a Long Island, New York native, Jim began his military career in February 2003 after having assisted in the 9-11 clean-up efforts as a volunteer firefighter and iron worker. In 2003-2004 he deployed with the 82nd Airborne Division, 2004-2005 he deployed a second time with F CO 51st LRSC. After recovering from reconstructive shoulder surgery and relocating to Ft. Riley, KS, he deployed in 2008 with the Big Red One. He returned home early, however, after receiving injuries during deployment. While being treated at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, the Army began the process of medically retiring Jim for his multitude of injuries and chronic severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury. After only 6 1/2 years in the Army, three deployments, and as a Staff Sergeant, Jim found his military career at its close much earlier than he had hoped. Then Jim Stanek became one of the founders of Paws and Stripes™, after he was sent home from his third tour in Iraq for injuries he received on deployment. After nine months in treatment at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, Jim discovered that the most comfort and relief he found was in the presence of therapy dogs. In May of 2010, Jim and his wife tried to obtain a trainer for their rescue dog, Sarge. They soon found out how difficult and expensive this process is. After being either turned down or unable to pay for service dogs from multiple organizations, the two looked at one another and agreed to start their own organization for veterans. Incorporated in June of 2010, Paws and Stripes™ was born. Now, he has trained his own service dog, a process that he has found rewarding, relaxing, and more effective than any pill or therapy session.
