This week join Adam and Robby with their special guest co-host Staff Sergeant James Stanek (Retired). James (Jim) was a Long Island, New York native, Jim began his military career in February 2003 after having assisted in the 9-11 clean-up efforts as a volunteer firefighter and iron worker.
In 2003-2004 he deployed with the 82nd Airborne Division, 2004-2005 he deployed a second time with F CO 51st LRSC. After recovering from reconstructive shoulder surgery and relocating to Ft. Riley, KS, he deployed in 2008 with the Big Red One. He returned home early, however, after receiving injuries during deployment. While being treated at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, the Army began the process of medically retiring Jim for his multitude of injuries and chronic severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.
After only 6 1/2 years in the Army, three deployments, and as a Staff Sergeant, Jim found his military career at its close much earlier than he had hoped. Then Jim Stanek became one of the founders of Paws and Stripes™, after he was sent home from his third tour in Iraq for injuries he received on deployment. After nine months in treatment at Brook Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, Jim discovered that the most comfort and relief he found was in the presence of therapy dogs. In May of 2010, Jim and his wife tried to obtain a trainer for their rescue dog, Sarge. They soon found out how difficult and expensive this process is. After being either turned down or unable to pay for service dogs from multiple organizations, the two looked at one another and agreed to start their own organization for veterans. Incorporated in June of 2010, Paws and Stripes™ was born. Now, he has trained his own service dog, a process that he has found rewarding, relaxing, and more effective than any pill or therapy session.
