FEMA Operational Report (Hurricane Sandy Update 121028)

Today’s report details where Supply points are being setup in the east coast. These areas will serve as staging areas for search and rescue operations, if needed. Also the report show the various alert levels and Emergency Operational status for each state.

Last night there was a 7.7M Earthquake in Canada, just below Alaska. This earthquake did generate a very minor tsunami. The highest wave was recorded in Hawaii at 1.5 feet.  The tsunami warning remain in effect today due to after shocks. As of this morning there was no reports of damage or injuries resulting from this earthquake.

Flooding is already being reported in the Mid-Atlantic states.

It is time to make sure you have evacuation points already planned out in case you are ordered to evac. Go bags should be ready and all home base supplies should topped off. Make sure all automobiles are full and your Shelter in place checklist are completed.

The storm is due to hit New Jersey on Monday or Tuesday.

Food Safety Report (E. coli outbreak – Washington)

Another E. coli outbreak is being reported this time it is in Washington State. Currently there is no fatalities for this incident. But reports are still coming in at this time.

The sad fact of this type of outbreak is that is completely avoidable. It all comes down to proper hygiene practices. Animals in general are not very clean and children go to these petting zoos, touch the animal or try’s to feed the animal their “sippy cup” and the adults think it is cute. Then what dose the child do, “well since the animal didn’t want it I will drink it!”

No one ever thing of the germs that the animal might be carrying. Once the child become sick the parent wants to either sue the zoo or shut them down.  Personal hygiene is not the zoo’s responsibility, it is ours. We must wash our hands after touching an animal in a petting zoo. Granted the zoo management can help themselves by maybe posting signage throughout the petting zoo or even making hygienic hand wipes available at the exit of the zoo, but ultimately it is up to us as parents to make sure we wash our children and their stuff before they place it back into their mouths.

Biological Medical Report (Plague California)

El Dorado County California Department of Environmental Health confirmed that 3 chipmunks tested positive for the plague.

This year there has been multiple reports of animals and a few humans contracting the plague in California and elsewhere in the US, so this in not an isolated case. Cases of plague are reported every year, however it seems this year the number of reports are higher than usual.

The higher number of reports means that the plague is out there and we must educate ourselves and our families on how to prevent contracting this deadly biological virus.

Here are some prevention measure that can be practiced by you and family members:

  1.  Individuals can greatly reduce their risk of becoming infected with plague by taking simple precautions, including avoiding contact with wild rodents and their fleas.
  2. Do not feed rodents in picnic or campground areas
  3. Never handle sick or dead rodents.
  4. Leave your pets at home when visiting areas where plague has been reported.

Earthquake . tsunami Alert (Canada 7.7M 10.27.12)

A 7.7M earthquake struck Canada tonight just below Alaska. This Earthquake has, I repeat HAS caused a Tsunami. This Tsunami is measuring only ½ ‘ in height and should not cause any damage

Again this is a Earthquake ALERT that has cause a tsunami heading towards Alaska and US West Coast. The size has been determined not to be danagerous.

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

Hurricanes can be dangerous killers.  Learning the hurricane warning messages and planning ahead can reduce the chances of injury or major property damage. Hurricanes develop around the equator and heads north during hurricane season.

Hurricane season is from June 1 to November 1 every year. The areas affected are the costal states (Atlantic, Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico). The real danger of hurricanes is the wind and the derby that it picks up. Another danger is the storm surge (Click Here for more Info) Also the flood and flash floods that occur during the storm.

Since this is an annual occurrence we have become better equipped to track and monitor these storms. However there still is no precise science to it and a hurricane will travel the way it wants to, so we must be prepared even if we are not in its projected path.

Environmental Alert (E. Coli Outbreak – Petting Zoos)

This situation has been around since last year, children are becoming infected and dying with E.Coli after visiting a Petting Zoo. This outbreak has been in North Carolina for close to a year and children are still dying.

The problem is that this is preventable if we just take some precautions. If you are at a petting zoo, then washing your hands and your children’s hands become imperative.  Animals are dirty by nature and can carry diseases (Bird flu, swine flu) so if you  or your children are touching these animals, you must take proper hygiene care in order not the contaminate yourself.

Hurricane Preparedness Update (Ready.gov)

Here are some tips from the ready.gov organization

Ready Campaign Hurricane Safety and Preparedness Tips

  • We urge residents and businesses in southeastern Florida and in other East Coast states along the storm’s projected path to monitor the progress of Hurricane Sandy.
  • While tropical storms are unpredictable, those in the possible path of the storm should be preparing. If you haven’t done so already, take the time now to put together a family emergency plan and emergency kit.  Some of the items in a basic emergency kit include: one gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation; at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food; battery-powered radio and a NOAA Weather Radio; flashlight and extra batteries; and First Aid kit.  Having a kit can help you weather the storm.
  • Tropical weather can bring high winds and heavy rains, so listen to local officials and follow their instructions.   Keep up to date with local conditions – follow TV and radio reports from your area, or visit  www.weather.gov (http://mobile.weather.gov on your phone) for the latest forecast.

Residents and businesses in southeast Florida and other East Coast states along the storm’s projected path should also familiarize themselves with the terms that are used to identify a severe weather hazard

We urges coastal and inland residents to be familiar with flood and flash flood terminology and safety tips:

  • Driving through a flooded area can be extremely hazardous. Almost half of all flash flood deaths happen in vehicles. When in your car, look out for flooding in low lying areas, at bridges, and at highway dips. As little as six inches of water may cause you to lose control of your vehicle.  Remember – turn around, don’t drown.
  • Flood Watch: Flooding is possible. Tune in to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio, or television for information.
  • Flood Warning: Flooding is occurring or will occur soon; if local officials give notice to evacuate, do so immediately.
  • Flash Flood Watch: Rapid rises on streams and rivers are possible. Be prepared to move to higher ground; listen to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio, or television for information.
  • Flash Flood Warning: Rapid rises on streams and rivers are occurring; seek higher ground on foot immediately.

Hurricane Preparedness Update (FEMA)

FEMA has released a report that is urging citizens to prepare for this disaster. This reports details some information about not only the Hurricane but also about flooding.

What is starting to worry everyone is the chance that this Hurricane has is weakens into a tropical storm will clash with a winter storm coming in from the West. What will happen is still up for speculation. The winter storm can either push Sandy out to sea or drag in into landfall and that is looking like it will be somewhere in the Mid- Atlantic states.
